Grant round FAQ

Grant round FAQ

Answers to the questions we hear most about the launch grant round. For the full picture of the platform, see About; ready to apply? Head to Apply for funding.

The launch round

We are kicking off the platform with a $1M grant round for work that reduces x-risk from AI.

  • Grants of $5k–$50k
  • For individuals, small teams, and organizations
  • Focused strictly on reducing x-risk from AI. Technical safety, governance, field-building, and evaluations are all in scope, as long as the path to reducing x-risk is clear.
  • A short application with a human-written theory of impact
  • Reviewed by a panel of AI safety practitioners and grantmakers, with decisions made on a rolling basis, so strong applications can be funded before the round closes
  • Fiscal sponsorship through Manifund, so you can receive a grant without setting up your own legal entity

The priority deadline is July 13, 2026, and every application submitted before it is guaranteed a review. The round is a way to launch the platform and seed it with live opportunities, not a one-time event. We intend to keep funding AI safety work well beyond it.

  • Do upvotes and community support affect funding decisions?
  • Still have questions?

Who is reviewing

  • Gavin Leech: co-founder of Arb Research, AI PhD.
    • Looking for: "critiques, critiques of critiques, evals, sensemaking, weird maybe-cool ideas, tools for human augmentation."
  • Ryan Kidd: CEO & Co-Founder of MATS.
  • Marcus Abramovitch: Managing Partner at AltX, former professional poker player, and prediction-market trader, who has personally donated around $1.5M to high-impact causes.

Apply for funding

Are the grants crowdfunded?

No — nothing in the round is crowdfunded. The full $1M is committed by a single funder, Anton Makiievskyi. The reviewer panel evaluates and scores applications; it does not pool community money, and there is no crowdfunding mechanic behind the grants.

What if my project doesn't reach its funding goal?

The round does not work like a GoFundMe campaign, where you either hit your target or walk away with nothing. If the reviewers score your application highly enough, your project's minimum funding ask (or more!) is granted from the round.

Beyond the round itself, the point of the platform is to put funding asks in front of many funders in the space at once. So even if the round doesn't fund your project, another funder can fully or partially fund it directly.

Do upvotes and community support affect funding decisions?

Upvotes, comments, and endorsements are signal for the reviewers — a way to surface what the community finds promising — but they play no official role in the review process. Funding decisions in the round come down to reviewer scores. That also means reviewers never need to "veto" a popular project: crowd support alone doesn't trigger a grant, and its absence doesn't block one.
