Updated 07/12/26 · Edited by orgAI risk is not in the public consciousness because it is abstract and new. Terminator narratives have made it hard to visualize risks like cyber attacks, extreme power concentration, bioterrorism uplift, gradual disempowerment, and misalignment in general.
My team of experienced filmmakers would decide (in collaboration with funders) which stories/failure modes should be made into short films.
Filmmakers who have a track record can apply to a certain story, and receive small grants to create the short films. Our team gives script and operational support remotely to ensure films stays aligned to our mission and on schedule
We post the films on a new YouTube channel, to complement current “explainer” channels like AI in Context, Rob Miles, or Rational Animations.
With enough success, we could opt for longer and longer films, hoping for a feature film one day.
Here’s a mockup of our public website.
Theory of Impact
Updated 07/12/26 · By grantmaking.aiMost people don’t want to watch “explainer” videos. They want to watch narrative fiction. There is a gap in this regard in the AI Safety ecosystem.
By reaching a broader audience, and telling stories that viscerally communicate the urgency of the issue (with links to 80k somewhere) we can grow the field.
Our films won’t end in doom that create apathy. All will end in def/acc technologies or people saving the day through preparation humanity did before takeoff.
A longer argument by one of us here.
