The Capability Race: Inside the AI Safety Crisis

A high-production visual journalism series combining primary-source data and motion graphics to break down the mechanics, safety crises, linguistic biases, and Arab-world implications of transformative AI.

Project Details

Our aim is to produce and publish a series of four Arabic videos over six months. This series will be covering the following critical themes:

Episode 1: What is Transformative AI and why are builders warning us about it?We will thoroughly explain this concept in Arabic for the first time. The episode will explore why researchers predict AI systems will surpass human abilities within a decade, and why this is considered one of the most consequential technological questions of the century.
Episode 2: The Alignment Problem. This episode explains why no one yet knows how to reliably control systems that are more capable than their builders. Drawing on published safety research, we will make complex concepts, like what alignment research actually does and why the problem remains unsolved, accessible to a general Arabic-speaking audience.
Episode 3: How AI Fails in Arabic. We will use failures in dialect and colloquial language as a window into how these systems truly work. This episode covers training data gaps, why high performance in English doesn't automatically transfer to other languages, and the implications for hundreds of millions of Arabic speakers who already rely on these tools.
Episode 4: The AI Race. We will examine the intense competition between labs and states to build ever more capable systems. This episode explores what these race dynamics mean for safety protocols and how transformative AI could reshape jobs and societies across the Arab world.

Each episode is 15 to 20 minutes, motion-graphics data drvien, explainer format, Arabic voiceover with English subtitles, and fact-checked against primary sources.

We founded Lima Arabia in 2022 as an independent Arabic explainer video studio. A team of three, fully self funded from day one. We have successfully published 25 episodes, reaching 127,760 verifief and organic viewers across 17 Arab countries in the MENA region. Our mission is to investigate and explain the mechanisms hidden within the systems we use in our daily life and rasie public awareness about its risks.

and it received highly positive viewer engagement, confirming the actual appetite for Arabic AI content.

Theory of Impact

The MENA region is currently investing heavily on AI infrastructure, yet the 400 million Arabic speakers worldwide have access to almost zero serious, localized content addressing its societal risks. The existing Arabic content on YouTube is largely superficial, failing to communicate the actual stakes. The few serious pieces available are usually dubbed material from traditional news channels, which were never designed to resonate with this specific demographic.

Lima Arabia fills this critical void. By leveraging our proven track record, we research these complex topics with the necessary depth and craft narratives that genuinely land with native Arabic speakers. Raising this targeted awareness will empower the Arab public to better understand, question, and navigate the rapid integration of transformative AI in their region.
