Community Health and Special Projects

The Community Health team is a department within the Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) dedicated to supporting the wellbeing and integrity of the effective altruism community. The team was formalized in 2018, building on Julia Wise's earlier work as a community contact person starting around 2015-2016. From 2022 to 2025, the team operated under the longer name "Community Health and Special Projects" to reflect an expanded mandate, but has since simplified back to "Community Health team."

The team's core functions include addressing interpersonal harm (such as harassment, boundary violations, and misconduct), advising community members navigating conflicts or unfair treatment, providing risk management guidance for sensitive projects (including programs involving minors), and helping EA organizations establish healthy cultures. They maintain a confidentiality policy and offer both named and anonymous reporting channels.

Notable past initiatives include the Gender Experiences Project investigating experiences of women and gender minorities in EA, the EA Organizations Reform Project examining board composition and whistleblower protections, and providing community support during crises such as the FTX collapse in 2022.

Nicole Ross led the team from December 2018 to April 2025. Julia Wise currently serves as team lead. The team includes community liaisons Catherine Low and Charlotte Darnell, along with systems and operations staff Lisanne van den Bosch and Marta Strzyga. The team publishes guidance on topics including power dynamics in EA, evaluating job opportunities, and calibrated trust in professional relationships.

CEA operates as a project of Effective Ventures, with charitable registrations in both the UK (Charity number 1149828) and the US (EIN 47-1988398). The Community Health team serves the global EA community and can be contacted through their website form or individual team member email addresses.
