Grants for Under-represented Scholars from Global South to attend AI4GOOD and NeurIPS 2026 in Paris, France.

Project Details

We're hosting the trustworthy AI for Good workshop at NeurIPS 2026 Paris. Following our previous success at ICML Seoul, we want to support more scholars from the global south to attend major conferences like NeurIPS. Many such scholars are hard-working and bottlenecked by connections (for finding graduate programs, long-term position in AI safety, or just finding mentors/peers in general back in their hometown) Many of them are in career-transitioning without advisor or employer (and hence no travel funding), we hope to enable more of them to connect at our workshop and get into the field of AI safety/reliability.

Theory of Impact

Power concentration is one of the most obvious yet under-explored risk from frontier AI, the vast majority of AI safety community/events are based in north america/western europe while AI literacy in the global south is in embryonic stage. People struggle to learn about AI safety if there's no one they know that can guide them and answer questions. We aim to support exactly these people that can guide their local community back home about AI and how to use them reliably. If we want AGI to go well for all of humanity, our effort cannot be limited to first-world countries.

How the money will be spent

The money will be used for travel grants targeting candidates coming from under-represented regions, where AI safety community is yet to be developed and there's a lack of resources for getting into the field and/or obtaining a long-term position to contribute to trustworthy AGI. Given the location of our Paris workshop, we expect at least 50% of these grants will support candidates from Africa. The amount of funding available directly determines how many candidates we might be able to fund.
