This career transition grant will pay for lodging and incidentals associated with living in DC and building AI safety expertise, leading to a permanent job in the field.
This project/funding is meant to enable Kristina Kempkey to transition to full time work in the AI safety field. I have undertaken several trainings and fellowships to build my AI safety and policy expertise, but I recently received feedback that I still don't have enough AI experience which is commensurate with my professional experience. This is holding me back from getting job offers. This grant will help subsidize living expenses in Washington DC for 6 months so that I can stay in DC and network/continue to gain professional AI training and experience to enter this field.
Funding lets me stay in DC in order to gain more experience in AI policy and deepen my networks → I build the fluency and contacts to get hired in the field and/or government → in this job I am a credible subject matter expert that can translate technical findings to policymakers and provide optimal courses of action to improve AI safety → this leads to quicker, better informed decisions about AI safety by policy makers → lower x-risk.
