Updated 07/04/26 · Edited by orgNational AI-literacy and Cybersecurity infrastructure is crucial to prevent abuse against state institutions and citizens. This project will help existing higher education institutions in Cameroon currently offering Computer Engineering courses to develop courses and degrees on machine learning, AI, AI Safety, and Cybersecurity. I will map the current offer of computer engineering in Cameroon and help the different universities to build it further and include AI Safety components, possibly connecting them with AI Safety global opportunities, and local and international expertise to make it happen.

The project will build capacities in Cameroon to respond to localized AI risks, and even to eventually contribute to global AI/Safeguarding research. A future where states and people are at the mercy of constant AI-powered attacks is probably one where Cameroon will be left out and vulnerable, in its worst form the country devolving into anarchy, irrelevance, and even disappearing as a functional state.

In 2023 an EA group (EA Buea) created an association (Effective Help) dedicated to neglected and cost-effective actions from the Cameroonian perspective. This organization has implemented +50 cost-effectiveness analysis, raises funds for small effective projects, and conducts evaluations and mapping consultancies for donors. The organization intends to implement projects directly if no other actor is taking up the task, AI Safety is one of those cases. Using this umbrella organization can facilitate institutional relationships, public partnerships, and administrative processes.
