grantmaking.ai Launch Round
How will the money be spent?
The core reproduction system already exists (developed in my lab at Stevens; working demo). This grant funds adapting it to the AI-safety corpus and running the audit, not building from scratch.
Minimum ($25k), est. reproducing 50 results
- $16,000 for part-time Ph.D. student research assistance and PI time over 3 months
- $7,500 for compute and API costs: e.g., LLM usage for the pipeline's parsing, synthesis, and debugging loops, plus GPU rental to re-execute fine-tuning-scale experiments (e.g., 7-8B open-weight models)
- $1,500 for hosting the public reproducibility profiles, storage, and CI
a
Ideal ($85k), est. reproducing 500 results
- $54,000 for Ph.D. student research assistance and PI time over 6 months
- $24,000 for compute and API costs (can include more training-based results)
- $4,000 for organizing and adjudicating a structured author right-of-reply round (SCORE-adjacent work found author cooperation moves reproduction success from 4% to 85%)
- $3,000 for dissemination to the alignment community
In practice, the project would also benefit greatly from contributions in-kind of computing resources, as for some paper this will definitely be the rate-limiting step and will otherwise preclude successful computational reproductions of the work.
