Closing the Unowned Trust Boundary: Runtime KV-Cache Integrity Verification against Safety-Bypass Tampering
What you'd do with the funding
The hackathon prototype detects KV-cache tampering that bypasses safety alignment. Follow-up work found the real problem: the verifier runs inside the same untrusted serving runtime it protects, so anyone with runtime access can disable it. I built an Intel TDX attestation path to move the verifier outside that boundary, then attacked my own design. The key result is negative: an attestation report forged entirely from public values, never touching TDX hardware, was accepted 8/8 by my verifier. Its seven checks validate structure, not a root of trust.
This funding buys one deliverable over four months: a verifier that rejects that forgery. The steps are fixed. (1) Move from raw TDREPORT to DCAP quotes — I have already retrieved a live v5 quote and validated its PCK chain to the Intel root. (2) Verify the QE report signature and bind the enclave key into the quote via REPORTDATA. (3) Fetch TCB info and CRLs from PCS/PCCS so an out-of-date platform cannot pass. (4) Re-run the forgery suite against the new verifier. Acceptance criterion: 0/8. Anything else is out of scope.
Two things from the current work carry forward. On TGI I made the cache recompute bit-exact — a zero benign floor across 990,720 entries — which turns detection from a threshold calibration into a byte comparison, with a documented runtime precondition (deterministic cuBLAS reduction). And I found that Python-level hooks silently do not fire during decode under CUDA-graph replay in both SGLang and TGI; the bug reports are filed separately and are not part of this ask.
Researcher time, 4 months full-time: $10,000
TDX CPU instances (Alibaba Cloud g8i) for the attestation path: $2,000
Confidential GPU hours (H100/H200 with TDX + NVIDIA CC) for GPU-side binding: $2,500
Standard GPU hours for re-running the forgery suite and overhead measurement: $2,000
Open-source release, documentation, publication costs: $1,500
Contingency: $2,000
Minimum ($12,000, 3 months): researcher time $5,500, compute $6,500 (same items, no overhead measurement). Deliverable and acceptance criterion unchanged.
