Project Details

ROOST, a new non-profit organization incubated at Columbia’s Institute of Global Politics, was launched at the 2025 French AI Action Summit to develop and distribute free, open-source safety tools—such as CSAM detection and content-safety building blocks—that help platforms and public-interest organizations of all sizes protect users in an AI-driven internet.

Theory of Change

ROOST’s strategy is to build and maintain open-source safety tools—such as content filters and CSAM detection systems—and make them freely available so that smaller platforms, news organizations, and public-interest groups can adopt strong online safety protections without needing to build their own infrastructure, thereby improving safety across the wider digital ecosystem.
