Project Details

Modeling Cooperation is building an AI wargaming platform to give policymakers a tangible sense of scenarios involving advanced AI and coordination risks. The technical work is led by Jonas Emanuel Müller and Paolo Bova. We need continued partnerships support to make sure we're able to reach the right people and funders. This would free up our capacity to focus on testing and developing our platform, without being stretched across fundraising/partnerships/comms work.

The outputs include submitted funding applications, institutional relationship-building, collaboration agreements, and opportunities for the platform to be tested and used across AI safety and other areas of global catastrophic risk (we're currently in talks about trialling a version of our platform at an upcoming EAG). Funding would support either six months at 15,600 USD or 12 months at 31,200 USD (0.4 FTE). Currently, our team are working well below market rate, with vital functions being supported by volunteers.

Theory of Impact

In general, the intended impact is better preparation before real crises occur. Insights from the simulations can inform policy design, institutional planning, and communication between organisations. We think that dedicated partnerships capacity can get our platform in front of more relevant people, and enable the collaborations that make our work valuable to the GCR ecosystem. We're building Modeling Cooperation into the go-to org for anyone who wants their understanding of catastrophic risk to be felt by, and salient to, the people who can pre-empt and prevent crises.

Hi, I'm curious to know how you would see your approach compared to organisations like Intelligence Rising? And if you have any more thoughts about what kinds of policy makers you would target, and how you would get their buy-in to participate in this kind of exercise?

Hi Mark, we already build the software that powers the Intelligence Rising game. We are now broadening the underlying platform so it can support a wider range of AI governance scenarios, including risks from extreme concentrations of power. We think our work would benefit the broader GCR field as well, by offering a more cost effective way for researchers to model their scenarios (versus trying to build their own platform from scratch).

For policymaker uptake, we expect to start through existing relationships and small pilots with partners who bring those connections. We already have a working platform and experience supporting Intelligence Rising, and now want to demonstrate that an adapted version of the platform can be useful across a broader range of governance problems.
