grantmaking.ai Launch Round
Most policymakers and business leaders who think about AI at all are thinking about risks such as job loss and misinformation. The arguments that actually matter for existential risk (recursive self-improvement, gradual disempowerment, the fact that alignment is unsolved) live in technical papers and niche blogs that these people will never read. But they do watch documentaries. So we're making one: a cinematic, carefully sourced film where the these ideas are explained in plain language.
Films like The Day After genuinely changed how leaders thought about nuclear risk during the Cold War. Our leaders should understand AI existential risk, not just an economic or social challenges associated with it.
The majority of funds will be used to pay an editor. Some of it will be used for equipment and travel expenses to promote the film, apply to film festivals, and obtain a distribution agreement.
We have already shot almost all of the interview material, written the script, and started work on animations. But this funding will allow us to execute the project at a higher level, and increases our chances of finding broad distribution.
