My academic background is in medical microbiology, with research interests spanning microbial ecology, pathogen evolution, antimicrobial resistance, bacteriophages, metagenomic surveillance, and One Health approaches to emerging biological threats. My work is motivated by a central question: how can scientific innovation and emerging technologies be translated into practical solutions for major health and development challenges in resource-constrained settings? I am particularly interested in bacteriophage research and phage therapy as alternatives to antibiotics, genomic and metagenomic approaches for pathogen surveillance, AI-enabled biosecurity, and the development of locally appropriate systems for detecting and responding to emerging biological threats. Beyond laboratory research, I am deeply interested in scientific institution-building, research capacity development, mentorship, entrepreneurship, and improving the environment in which African scientists conduct high-impact research. I have been involved in developing research programmes, mentoring students and early-career researchers, building collaborations, and exploring sustainable models for biotechnology innovation. My broader interests include global health security, pandemic preparedness, antimicrobial resistance, biotechnology governance, responsible applications of artificial intelligence in biology, science policy, innovation ecosystems, and the design of interventions that are effective within the institutional and infrastructural realities of low- and middle-income countries. I am especially interested in supporting and collaborating on ambitious ideas that combine scientific rigor with practical impact, particularly projects that strengthen biological surveillance, accelerate solutions to antimicrobial resistance, build scientific talent and institutions, and improve Africa’s capacity to contribute to global scientific progress and biosecurity.
